Sleep Apnea Preoperative Instructions

1. STOP ALL aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, various pain relievers (except Tylenol), anti-inflammatory medications at least one week prior to surgery in order to prevent bleeding. Please check with us for any question regarding any medications.

2. YOU MUST SEE YOUR PRIMARY DOCTOR AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE SURGERY. Sleep apnea is stressful for your cardiovascular system. Your doctor may need to perform additional tests to prepare you for surgery (ie stress test). You will need sufficient time for tests to be performed, or surgery will be cancelled. Make sure your appointment with your primary doctor is AT LEAST SEVEN DAYS before surgery.

3. If you are having genioglossal advancement surgery, a PANOREX X-ray from your dentist is required to plan your ‘bone window’. It should be reviewed by your doctor at least a week prior to surgery.

4. FOOD OR DRINK is prohibited after midnight prior to the day of surgery.

5. MEDICATIONS for your blood pressure or your heart rhythm SHOULD BE TAKEN the day of surgery with a sip of water. Exceptions are aspirin, ibuprofen and blood thinners as discussed above. If you have any questions please call us and/or your primary doctor.

6. If you have a CPAP MACHINE at home, bring it to the hospital the day of surgery, to be available if needed.

7. You will typically need a MINIMUM OF ONE WEEK OFF FROM WORK for recuperation

8. Note that sleep apnea surgery carries with it a RISK of excess swelling and/or airway obstruction. Many precautions have been taken prior to, during and after your procedure to minimize any risk. Your doctor will do what ever is needed to protect your breathing passages and maintain your safety.
