GERD (Gasteroespohageal Reflux Disease)

Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when acid and food in the stomach back up into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is reflux that occurs more than twice a week for a few weeks. It usually causes heartburn and other symptoms. GERD can cause other health problems over time if it is not treated.

After Your Visit:

1. Take your medication as directed. 2. Get all workup ordered, if any. You will be contacted to come in to the office to discuss the results. 3. Avoid drinking too much alcohol. 4. Avoid eating large meals frequently: Eating a lot of food at one time increases the amount of acid needed to digest it. Eat six small meals each day instead of three large ones, and eat slowly. 5. Avoid eating for 2 to 3 hours before bedtime as this may also decrease acid reflux. 6. Avoid chocolate, peppermint, fried or fatty foods, and caffeine-containing and citrus fruits and juices. 7. Elevate the head of the bed: Place 6-inch blocks under the head of your bed frame. Use one or two pillows under your head and shoulders when sleeping. 8. Keep a healthy weight. 9. Avoid smoking. 10. Keep all follow-up appointments.

Come in for an Evaluation if:

1. Your medication is not working. 2. Your symptoms worsen. 3. You experience blood in your stool. 4. You experience abdominal and or worsening of the abdominal pain. 5. You begin to lose weight. Go to the Emergency Immediately: 1. If you note black stools. 2. You develop severe abdominal pain.
