Letter to our patients:

Dear Valued Patient,

I am writing to let you know I will be taking time off while I recover from a second planned surgery. 

In the meantime, I want you to know we will continue to serve you without interruption, and continue to schedule new appointments and provide care for my patients who are currently being treated.  I am partnering with the sports medicine physicians at Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center at Emory Johns Creek Hospital to ensure a smooth transition of care during this period.  Their address is:

Dr. William B. Haynes, Jr. is an Orthopaedic Surgeon in private practice at Haynes Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery, LLC in Cumming, Georgia.  In addition to general orthopaedics, his specialties are sports medicine, anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus surgery, and arthroscopy, shoulder disorders including rotator cuff and instability problems, knee, elbow, and industrial medicine.

Dr. Haynes earned a pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia, and a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. While attending the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Haynes was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, graduating in the top 5% of his class. He completed a surgical internship and an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. His training at the University of Kentucky included a year at the famous Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, and he was a team physician for the University of Kentucky men and women’s basketball teams.

Dr. Haynes completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the world renowned Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He trained as one of the last fellows with the late Jack Hughston, M.D. who was internationally known as the father of sports medicine. He practiced Orthopaedics in Savannah, Georgia for five years. While in Savannah, Dr. Haynes was the team physician for Savannah State University, many area high schools, and the Savannah Sand Gnats, a minor league Dodgers’ organization. He served as a team physician for the 1996 Olympic games and the Paralympics in Atlanta. He has practiced with the Hughston Clinic in Atlanta, Premier Orthopaedic Surgery, and now Haynes Sports Medicine.

He has taught other orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists throughout the United States and from other parts of the world the latest and most innovative techniques regarding ACL reconstruction of the knee and difficult arthroscopic shoulder repairs including rotator cuff repairs, instability and labral repairs at the prestigious Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago. He has been an associate clinical professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Emory University, teaching Emory University Family Practice residents. 

He is very active in the local sports community and has worked closely with several area high schools and their coaching staffs serving as head team physician. The schools include North Forsyth High School, South Forsyth High School, Pinecrest Academy, and Horizon Christian. He has covered high school football games for over twenty years. He has extensive experience with soccer injuries and has served as the team physician for the boys and girls high school soccer teams above. In addition, he has served as the medical director for one of the local county select soccer clubs.

He has worked with professional baseball players with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers minor league organizations. He maintains a special interest in baseball injuries in adolescents and young adults and works closely with local pitching and teaching professionals to aid in recovery of their injuries.

Dr. Haynes is actively involved in medical missions and charitable organizations.  He worked with Helping Hands Medical Missions www.hhmm.org and two other surgeons to bring surgical subspecialties to a very remote area of Mexico. Dr. Haynes and several members of his family work with and support  the Ghana Friendship Project, www.ghanafp.org and have traveled to Ghana, Africa several times to help bring medical care, clean water, and education to this region of the world.  Information about the 2017 River Run for Hope Race to support GFP is available at

Haynes Sports Medicine also works with and supports Comunita Cenacolo www.comunitacenacolo.org, an international program that serves young adults struggling with addiction.  Dr. Haynes and his family have spent time in Lima, Peru supporting two orphanages affiliated with this organization.

He remains active in sports and has coached football and basketball at the middle school level. He also coaches recreational teams.

Dr. Haynes lives in Forsyth County with his wife Laura. They have five children who have been very involved in sports at all levels.  Two of his children participate in collegeiate sports at Division I schools
