Medications to stop before Allergy Testing

"Non-Sedating" Long Acting Antihistamines:
- Astemizole (Hismanal) Withhold for 14 weeks before testing.
- Cetirizine (Zyrtec Withhold 4 days before testing.
- Loratadine (Claritin) Fexofenadine (Allegra) Withhold for 1 week before testing.
Antidepressants that have antihistamine effect:

Amitriptyline (Elavil), Clomipramine (Anafranil),Doxepin (Sinequan), Imipramine (Tofranil), Trimipramine (Surmontil), Amoxapine (Asendin), Desipramine, (Nurpramin), Nurtriptyline (Pamelor, Aventyl), Protriptyline (Vivactil), Maprotiline (Ludiomil), Mirtazapine (Remeron), Trazodone (Desyrel), Nefazadone (Serzone) Withhold for 2 weeks before testing.

Miscellaneous Anti-Anxiety Agents:

Hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax), Alprazolam (Xanax), Clonazepam(Klonopin) Withhold for 1 week before testing.

Herbal Supplements:

Astragalus, Licorice, Green Tea, Milk Thistle, Saw Palmetto, St. John’s Wort, Feverfew Withhold 1 week before testing

Antihistamines:

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), Brompheniramine (Dimetapp), Clemastine (Tavist, Antihist), and Combination Drugs (Actifed, Drixoral, Trinalin) Withhold for 4 days before testing.

Topical Steroid Anti-Inflammatories:

creams, ointments, gels, solutions, lotions Withhold morning of test.

Histamine Blockers:

Cimetidine (Tagamet), Ranitidine (Zantac), Nizatidine (Axid), Famotidine (Pepcid) Withhold morning of test.

Leukotriene Receptor Agonists:

Montelukast (Singulair), Zileuton (Zyflo), Zafirlukast (Accolate) Withhold night before and morning of test.

Miscellaneous:

Cisapride (Propulsid), Metoclopramide (Reglan) Withhold morning of test. Prochlorperazine (Compazine) Withhold for 3 days

Asthma inhalers: Corticosteroids – inhaled or short term oral, Cromolyn (Intal IH/Nasalcrom), Omeprazole (Prilosec), Lansoprazole (Prevacid), Valproate (Depakote), Quinine, Fluvoxamine (Luvox)

Antidepressants and Anti-anxiety: Bupripion (Wellbutrin), Buspirone (BuSpar), Chlordiazepoxide (Libritabs), Citalopram (Celexa), Clorazepate (Tranxene), Diazepam (Valium), Estazolam (Prosom), Flurazepam (Dalmane), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Lorazepam (Ativan), Midazolam (Versed), Nefazodone (Serzone), Paroxetine (Paxil), Oxazepam (Serax), Quazepam (Doral) Sertraline (Zoloft), Temazepam (Restoril), Trazadone (Desyrel), Triazolam (Halcion), Venlafaxine (Effexor), Zolpidem (Ambien) Inhaled Short Acting Beta Adrenergics: Albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), Levalbuterol (Xopenex), Bitolterol (Tornalate), Isoetharine (Bronkosol), Metaproternol (Alupent, Metaprel), Pirbuterol (Maxair), Terbutaline (Brethaire, Brethine), Isoproterenol (Isuprel), Primatene Mist
